As Unikiln, we are passionate about kiln technology and ceramic materials. While exploring South India's architectural heritage, we were fascinated to discover the unique properties of laterite clay: high iron content (typically 15–35% Fe₂O₃), giving it a natural terracotta red color, excellent plasticity for easy molding, and post-firing low water absorption (<20%) with high strength for exceptional durability.
These qualities make laterite clay the perfect raw material for Mangalore roof tiles. Since the 1860s, this clay sourced from Karnataka's coastal regions has been shaped into iconic interlocking curved tiles, offering superior thermal insulation, rain resistance, and a lifespan often exceeding a century—ideally suited to the tropical monsoon climate.
Driven by our deep understanding of materials and curiosity about the link between laterite clay and traditional Mangalore tile craftsmanship, we aim to respect this valuable heritage while wisely utilizing local resources. By introducing modern kiln and production technologies, we hope to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and product quality, revitalizing this classic industry.
